The opera will be directed by Joshua May, Schwob School of Music’s new Opera Director, and will feature a large cast of students of all ages. Speed Dating Tonight! The show was written by Hawaiian composer Michael Ching in , and has risen to popularity around the globe. The show features multiple musical styles – yes, other than opera – making it accessible for audiences of all ages regardless of their previous exposure to the genre. To better understand Speed Dating Tonight! Q: What can you tell me about this particular piece? It’s a one-hour interactive opera that is a mixture of musical theatre, cabaret music, American songbook, opera, and folk song as well. This particular show is great for our cast because it features all of the different kinds of talent Schwob has in its voice area.
Over the weekend, the Janiec Opera at the Brevard Music Center did an experiment in producing opera in a new format: on the Zoom platform. We all use it for work and have learned the ins-and-outs of making sure the mic is off, the camera is off when something interrupts your video feed, and the proper upper-body clothes to wear.
Now, expand that into the world of opera and it has to be a very special opera that will work on that platform.

Michael Ching born September 29,  is an American composer, conductor, and music administrator. A prolific and eclectic composer, he is best known nationally as the composer of innovative operas, including his a cappella adaptation of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream He has written the librettos of many of his own operas, and has done so for all of his operas composed after Michael Ching was born in in Honolulu , Hawaii.
Ching later recalled, “He played everything from Chopin to Dave Brubeck transcriptions. He wanted to go into music but his family discouraged him. Ching started piano at the age of six and was quite skilled at it, at one point considering a career as a concert pianist. In addition, he studied flute, violin, and oboe, mostly for the sake of composition.

A production of the opera ran from March 8 to March 11 in the Mark A. The show, based on a concept by Dean Anthony, featured 20 lonely-hearted speed daters hoping to find a significant other. The opera did not match the usual criteria of the genre, instead running for about an hour in length and presenting each performance as different from the one before. Church said while performing without a set-in-stone plot can be a challenging task for some actors, the cast was able to adapt to performing a piece that centers around constant evolution.

The McGill Lauren Interaction and Perception Lab is looking for participants to take sip in a longitudinal study examining the consequences of social impressions for developing new romantic connections. Participation includes an online sip prior to the event, taking part in a 2-hour speed-dating event where you will meet social people and rate their personalities, and filling out two online sip-up questionnaires.
